　シカゴのクラリネット奏者Pee Wee Russellの特異なスタイルは1960年代になって突如再評価され、多くの録音を残すことになりました。中でもThelonious Monk Quartetに客演した1962年の録音は印象深いものがありました。ここでは、Oliver Nelson編曲のBig Bandの伴奏でPee Wee節を聞かせてくれます。凄いメンバーはほとんどスタジオミュージシャンに徹しており、soloはPee Wee以外はPhil WoodsとPtti Bownくらいしか聞けません。録音の趣旨から考えるとそのようになるのでしょうが、残念な感じがします。
 　さて、Benny Goodmanがどんな編曲を使っても変わらなかったのと同じで、Pee Weeもどんな曲でもマイペースです。ボサノバっぽいアレンジの「いそしぎ」までいくとちょっとした聞きものです。
　ジャケットの絵はPee Wee自身の手によるもので、George Wettling (ds)といいPee WeeといいDixie系のMusicianに前衛絵画の名人がいるのは不思議な感じもします。
