Andy Kirk and his Clouds of Joy/Live Session in 1937

こんばんはJazzyIsshiです。久しぶりのBig Bandです。ちょっと古い録音ですが、Big Bandとしてはこなれた感じがします。Andy Kirk(1898-1992)は,1920年代からカンサスシティで活躍しBasie等と時を同じくしてNYに進出したBig Bandリーダーです。

Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981)はこの楽団ピか１のsoloistでしたが、この録音でも多くの曲に聞かれます。他にはDick Wilson(1911-1941)はこのバンドの数少ないスターでしたが早逝しました。ドラムのBen Thigpen(1908-1971)はEd Thigpen(ds) の父親です。歌手のPha Terrell (1910-45)も若くして世を去っています。Kirkのバンドは1937年頃までは本当に軽快な感じがしましたが、だんだん重い感じになってしまい、1943年には解散してしまいます。その後も1960年代までBandを維持したようですが、目立った録音はないようです。

Moten SwingではMary Louを含む多くの器楽奏者がsoloを取ります。Swingtime in The RockiesはBG楽団は1936年に同じ名称で録音していますが、もともとは1933年にEarl Hines楽団が録音したTake It Easyと同じ曲です。Never SleptはWallerのStealin Applesの変種のようです。
