Bunny Berigan

1930年代を代表する白人トランぺッターBunny Beriganです。

Bunny Berigan(1908-1942)は黒人Louis Armstrong(1901-1971)と白人Bix Beiderbeck(1903-1931)の対立するスタイルを巧みに融合し、1930年代において最も影響力の大きかった白人トランぺッターです。Hal Kemp, Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey楽団を渡り歩き、1937年頃からは自分のBig Bandを率いますが、その頃から酒に溺れ、肝硬変のためわずか33歳で世を去ります。このCDは1935年から1939年までの名演を集めたものです。
BeriganのスタイルはHotな中にBixの面影を感じさせる独特のものです。最大の後継者はHarry Jamesかも知れませんが、Jamesに比ても、Bix派といわれるBobby Hacketに比べてもBixの香りをずっと強く感じます。
I Can't Get Startedは畢生の名演と言われて、後年まで多くのトランぺッターがなぞりました。

 1939年のBandはメンバーが極端に弱体化しています。有名Musicianはほとんど居なくなってしまいました。酒飲みのBunnyについていけなくなったのかギャラをケチったのか、メンバーは後年有名になる若手メというわけでもありません。この弱体ぶりは1942年まで続きます。
