George Van Eps(1913-1998)は1913年生まれの古老ながら、7弦ギターを弾き教則本も書いているいわゆる師匠格のギタリストです。9を除いてすべて有名曲。テンポも速からず遅からず。リラックスした演奏を聞かせてくれます。ただ単にsoloを回す演奏ではなく、両者のからみの部分が相当多く、このグループが準レギュラーとして多くの録音を残しているのも頷けます。
Howard Alden (1958- )はConcord 専属となった1980年代末頃から活躍し始めた中堅（当時）です。少し古めのスタイルで、Ken Peplowsky, Kenny Davern, Ruby Braff等と多くの録音を残しています。

Bill Evans（1929-1980）といえばもっぱらtrio、たまにsoloという感じで、ホーン奏者を自ら加えた録音は多くありません。。これは珍しくも、ワンホーンの編成で演じられますが、中身はEvansのJazzであると言って良いでしょう。それにしても、枯葉のイントロなど、これしか無いのかと思わせる変化のなさで、Jazzとしては相当損をしている。発売当時がどうであったか分かりませんが、Evans人気ゆえ長い生命力を保ったCDです。
なお、Steigは2011年頃から横浜に住んでいましたが、2016年他界しました。
Steigはこの録音の数年前、交通事故で顔面麻痺となり、片耳の聴力も失ていたといわれます。そんなことは全然感じさせない演奏です。「スパルタカス愛のテーマ」なんて曲が混ざっているあたりに1969年という時代を感じさせます。

Capitalらしい高音質の録音で、すごく新しい感じのBneyy Carterが楽しめます。13では珍しくソプラノサックスを吹いており、1980年代風な感じがします。13,14,15はCarter作ですが他はいわゆるスタンダード曲です。12と14では自分で吹くtsをオーバーダビングしています。この時代にしては珍しい試みです。

曲はWarsaw Concerto以外はよく知られた曲。Dorothy Donegan(1922-1998)はHines-Tatumの影響下の派手なスタイルのピアニストです。ここでも元気一杯にストライドやブギウギまで繰り出して聴衆を楽しませます。実演を間近で見られたらさぞ面白かったことだろうと思います。Jimmy Woode (1926-2005) はエリントン楽団出身、Norman Wearringtonは幅広く活躍するベテランです。（当時は若手でした。）

1968年の録音の割には音質がくぐもった感じがします。1は1930年代にDeccaへの録音もあるが全然違う編曲でLockjawのテナーが活躍します。２はGillespieのBop曲だがBasie楽団にもいくつかの録音があるのはちょっと不思議です。3と11はRicahrd Booneの特徴的な歌をfeatureしたものですが、ちょっとゲテモノです。Yvonnee Lanauzeは1950年のエリントンの初めてのLP録音の時Mood Indigoを歌っていた歌手です。ここでは、古い感じのBlues歌手として登場し、4と9で歌いますが、絶叫調です。他は典型的Basieナンバーです。
Hrold Jonesはこの当時の若手ドラマーでした。Norman KeenanはHarry Belafonteの伴奏者でもあった堅実なbassistです。
音が良ければ、Basie in London (これも実はStockholm録音）に比肩する名盤になったかもしれません。（ちょっとオーバーか）

曲は１９４０年代から６３年ころまでのヒット曲が雑多に並んでいます。Jazzではあまり取り上げられない曲が多いのですが、Basie楽団が演奏するとJazzyな感じになります。何を演奏してもJazzになったLouis Armstrongと同じ感じがします。それでも10は、Maharia Hackson, Nina Simon, Andy Williams, Chris Barbor等が取り上げています。Soloの分量は多くないのですが、Eric Dixonのfl, Lockjawのts, Al Greyのtbがメインでしょうか。tpのソロが誰かは分かりません。Basie自身は5で活躍します。2名のドラマーの名前がクレジットされていますが、いずれも特徴を発揮するまでいたっておらず聞き分け困難です。
まあ、全てのBasie Fanへお薦めというわけではありませんが、1960年代半ばは迷いの時期だったと思って聞けばそれなりに面白く聞けます。

元々のLPのタイトルがそうなっていたのか？CD化する際に誤ったのか分かりませんが、1943-1949は看板に偽りありで、実際は1943-1948とすべきでした。4,5と6,7は同年で全く同じメンバーですが、異なる日の録音故このような表記になったものと思われます。
Yeah Manは1930年代にHenderson楽団が録音したのと同じ編曲です。The KingはJumpin’ At The Woosdideを焼き直したような（というよりそのもの）の曲ですが、tsのWardell Greyが長いソロスペースを与えられています。8でも長いtsソロが出ますが、こちらはLucky Thompsonと思われます。

過渡期の演奏だけにちょっとどうなの？って感じのところもありますが、新旧のメンバーの入れ替わり具合も面白く聞けます。

まさに黄金時代のCount Basie楽団のライブ録音です。同じ日というわけではなく、1958年のいくつかの日の演奏から集められたもののようです。聞きものは、何といっても１で、この曲はAtmic Basieでも演奏されていますが、ここではBasieのピアノが延々と活躍します。ライブではこんなに長く弾いていたんですね。
全ての曲で、Sonny Payneの強力なドラムが聞かれ、エンターティナー振りを発揮しています。Eddie Jonesのベースもよく効いています。ずらりと並んだBasie Standardというべき有名曲は少し大きめの音量で聞くと迫力あります。62年前の録音とは思えません。

J.J.Johnson (1924-2001）はトロンボーンの名人として長らくポールの首位を独占してきました。1944年のJATPから完成された感じで、あまりBop～Hard Bop臭はしません。Zoot Sims等と同じように少し古いコンセプションに新しい感覚を乗せたインプロヴァイザーだったと思います。
ここに聞かれるコンボはTommy Flanaganを除いて、当時のJJのレギュラーではなく、いつもとはちょっと違う緊張感があります。Blue Trombone Part2ではRoachの長いsoloも聞かれます。What's NewやGone With The Windなどで聞かれるちょっと錆びた感じの音色はこの時代のJJの真骨頂と思います。

こんばんはJazzy Isshiです。今夜は、Hard Bopです。George Wallington（1924-1993）はイタリア生まれで、1950年代に活躍しましたが、1960年頃に引退、1980年代に復帰しましたがぱっとした活躍はないまま亡くなりました。

曲は、スタンダードとオリジナルが半々の構成です。5はスローバラードです。典型的なHard Bop風味の演奏です。フロントのDonald Byrd,Phil Woodsともに快調です。Art TaylorもいかにもHard Bopといったドラミングです。George Wallingtonは元々作曲だったのですが、それがあらぬか、John LewisやT.Monk風のところがあります。Bud Powell風ではぜんぜんありません。

こんばんはJazzyIsshiです。今日は日本でも非常に人気の高かったピアニストKenny Drew（1928-1993）の晩年の演奏です。このCDは日本でしか出なかったよう、海外では全くと言っていいほど取り上げられていません。

　1980年以降の軟弱路線のKenny Drewはいわゆるオサレなピアノを弾いて、毒にも薬にもならない盤を大量生産しました。これは、その中でも日本人好みの曲（月の砂漠、クレオパトラの夢、不思議の国のアリス）をちりばめて人気盤となる筈でした。売れ行きがどうであったか知る由もないのですが、DrewよりもPedersen（1946-2005）のベースが活躍する内容は既にDrew自身の体調がすぐれなかったのかも知れません。ドラムのAlvin Queen（1950－　）はこの中では若手ですが、1で長いsoloがありますが、おとなしい伴奏に徹しています。

　レイブライアント(1931-2011)は1972年、モントルーでの実況盤でブレークした50年代から活躍するピアニストです。それまではリーダー作もありましたが、何となく地味な歌伴ピアニストといった感じでした。1980年代にはsoloやtrioの録音がそこそこあります。1987年はこれと、plays Ellington and Basieが録音されました。plays....が有名盤になっているのに対してこちらは、地味な印象です。
　選曲はスタンダード化しているものも多いのですが、Jazzmenのオリジナルで固められています。When Lights Are Lowは、サビを省いたMiles Davis伝来のものではなく、オリジナルの形態です。Ray BryantはBenny Carterのピアニストだったこともあるので、作曲者仕込みということなのでしょう。

　際に音を聞いてみると、1－9がJohn Denglerのbass-sanの入ったセッション、10-14が古いguitaristBig Mike McKendrickが加わったセッションのようです。
　abbo Smith (1908-1991)は1920年代から活躍するトランぺッターで、一時はLouis Armstrongのライバルと目された時期もありましたが、そうていそこには及ばず、地味な楽歴を送りました。このCDは1961年にドイツ出身のギター奏者Marty Grosz(1930- 　）の肝いりで録られた2つの貴重なセッションを収めたものです。メンバーは地味ですがベテラン揃いです。クラリネットのFred Chace（1927－）はFlank Chaceとしても知られますが、シカゴで地味な活動に終始しました。Frank TeschmacherやPee Wee Russelの流れを組む特異なスタイルを持ちます。bass-saxのJohn M. Dengler (1927-1994)もDixie畑にいくつかの録音がありますが、地味です。Big Mike McKendrick（1901-1965）も1920年代にLouis Armstrongとの録音がありますが地味です。11,12,13では結構長いsoloが聞かれます。Marty Groszはここではbを弾いています。

主役のJabbo Smithはこの演奏は全盛期というわけではないでしょうが、何となくおとなしく、趣味の良さを前面に出したような演奏は晩年のKing Oliverを想起させます。よく聞くと大衆受けはしないmusician好みの典型的underratedにように思います。

1974年のNiceのJazz FestivalはEubie Blake, Earl Hines , Milt BucknerなどのいわゆるUnderratedのPianistが登場し、欧州のファンを魅了しました。1903年生まれのClaude Hopkinsもその中の一人で、Earl Hinesよりも２つ年上ですが、実に若々しいピアノ演奏を聞かせてくれます。そしてちょっと軽ろやかな感じがします。Hinesと同じように30年代にはBig Bandを率い、戦後もソロやコンボで活躍したのに全然有名でないのは軽さゆえでしょうか？
