1951年末から1952年の初めにかけてNYCのコンドンの店での演奏の実況録音です。普段はあまりsoloの聞かれないBob Casey (1909-1986) がほぼ全曲でsoloスペースを与えられているのは実況ならではでしょう。Eddie Condon (g)については、ギターの音はおろか、紹介の声すらほとんど聞こえませんが、ジャケットの写真にはちゃっかりギターを弾く態で写っています。（このジャケ写のクラリネット奏者は、エドモンドホールではなく、ピーナッツ・ハッコーのようです。）曲は全曲スタンダードです。5はCondonとクレジットされていますが、Oliver-ArmstrongのDipper Mouth Bluesです。

古典の再演3部作の最後はChicago Jazzです。主にAustin High Schoolの生徒たちによって演奏されていたJazzを嚆矢とするといわれます。Condon とWettling のグループはいつもの連中という感じがしますが、McPartlandのグループは珍しい人選です。Bud Jacobson （1906-1960）, Boyce Brown (1910-1959), Floyde Bean (1904-1970), Dick Mcpartland (1905-1957), Jim Lannigan (1902-1983)は古老ながら録音の少ない人たちです。
1920年代の学生の演奏の再現を目指しましたが、今となってはそれは無理な相談で、雰囲気は伝わらないことはありませんが、技量が完全にプロなので古い感じは全くないSwing風Dixieland Jazzになっています。

Deccaが作ったKansas City, New Orleans, Chicagoの各都市のJazzを再現した3組のSPアルバムをLP化したものです。1940年の時点でシカゴへ上ったJazzの第一世代のかなりの人たちが現役で演奏していました。New Orleans JazzはModernにアレンジされ、昔の雰囲気より当時のSwing Jazz風な仕上がりになっています。A1,2,3,4はSatchmoとBechetの久しぶりの共演です。　しかｈし、聞きものはB3,4,5,6です。Natty Dominique (1896-1982), Preston Jackson （1902-1983）,Richard M. Jones　（1892-1945）、Lonnie Johnson　（1899-1970）、John Lindsay (1894-1950), Baby Dods (1898-1959)、Fred Tubby Hall （1895-1945）といった19世紀生まれの古老たちの演奏が聴けます。John LindsayとTubby Hallのsoloは貴重です。いずれも洗練されたSwing風ですがLonnie Johnsonのgは泥臭い感じを残しています。Natty Doimiqueのmute soloはOliver風です。

1940年にDeccaはKansas City Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Chicago Jazzの３枚のSPによるセットを売り出しました。当時、Swing Jazzの源を探ろうという動きがいろいろなムーブメントがあり、New Orleasn Jazzがリバイバルしたり、Bopのような新しいJazzが起こったり、自分たちのIdentityが気になり始めた頃合いでもありました。集められたMusicianはこの録音に関する限り、当時の現役の人達で、物珍しさという点では、残念ながら普通と言わざるを得ません。それでも、Eddie Durham (1906-1987) のバンドのサイドメンは無名の人たちばかりですが、soloは自信に満ちたなかなかのものです。Moten SwingではCharlie Parkerの先生だったBuster Smith (1904-1991) のasが多く聞けます。もちろんDurhamのElectric Guiterも珍しいものです。Willard Brown (1909-1967)のasも珍しいものです。Baise楽団のDoggin' AroundはDecca 時代の一二を争う圧倒的な名演です。

 Earl Hines (1903-1984)はこの年すでに62歳を迎えようとしていました。既に過去の人物と思われていた節もありますが、Little Theater Concertが２枚のLPとして出されると突如として再評価ブームが巻き起こりました。もちろんピアノの腕は全盛期から衰えは感じられず、冒険心に満ちたフレーズを、つんのめりながら演じ、最終的には持ち直すというHines独特の芸当を聞かせてくれます。Fats Wallerの得意曲をメドレーで弾くのはこの後もずっと続けていくことになります。

Red Norvo (1908-1999) は最初期のxyl およびvib奏者です。　1974年のセッションは脇をベテランで固めていますが、1975年の方は、Lloyde Ellis (1920-1994), Gene Cherico (1935-1994), Donald Bailey (1933-2013)といった若手（Norvoから見ると）を起用しています。Lloyde EllisはちょっとR&B風のguiterを弾いています。
曲は数曲のNorvoのオリジナルを除いて古いスタンダード曲です。Jo Jones, Milt Hinton, Hank Jonesの伴奏は、Norvoのスピード感と洗練度の良く合っており、この手のスタンダード曲には効果的です。1975年の録音はややまとまりに欠けるきらいがあります。

Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) は晩年何枚かのピアノソロを録音しました。これはその中の１枚ですが、Christmas Song集となっています。そう考えずに曲はただの素材と考えれば、Brubeck節満開のsoloと聞くことができます。Jazzで演奏されるのは、Winter Wonderland, Dixieの古いstandard曲であるMaryland, My Marylandの原曲である”樅ノ木"、Mel TormeのThe Christmas Songあたりでしょうか。

Eddie Condon (1905-1973), Gene Krupa (1909-1973)はこの録音の翌年相次いで世を去っています。なので、この録音は最後に近い録音です。Condonはこの頃、ほとんどギターを弾くことはなく、演奏中もsoloistに声援を送ることに終始しています。Krupaはいつもの熱狂的なドラムを叩いています。Wild Bill Davison（1906-1989）は同年代でChicago Jazzの時代からの仲間ですが、Kenny Davern（1935-2006）とDick Welstood (1927-1987)は戦後派です。曲の中では8が珍しい選曲ですが、他は手慣れた得意曲です。

Eddie BarefieldはBennie Moten, Cab Calloway, Chick Webbの楽団に所属し主にtsとarrを担当しました。自身のリーダー作は全盛期の30-40年代にはなく、まとまった録音はこの1977年の録音まで待たねばなりません。tsの音色はBudd Johnsonを思わせるもので、Hawkins派ではあるかも知れませんが、ややすべすべした音色で、modalな感じさえします。Coltraneの影響なのでしょうか。
曲は（おそらく）全てBarefieldのoriginalと思われます。Bopishな曲調が多いように思います。3はSweet Georgia Brownが原曲です。他も原曲がありそうな雰囲気です。6はHawkins風のplayです。7はBud Freemanが入っているようです。
2つのsessionは、Scott Hamiltonのコンボのメンバーを主体にNYCで活躍、そしてBarefieldに近い世代のMusicianも加わっています。中ではJon Faddis（1953-　）とWarren Vache (1951- ）が若手ということになります。Mousie Alexander (1922-1988)、Panama Francis　（1918-2001), Milto Hinton (1910-2000)が近い世代ということができるでしょう。

Norman Grantzは傘下の大物ミュージシャンを組み合わせて多くの録音を残しました。他流試合はJazzの醍醐味でもありますが、Art Tatumとの組み合わせはなかなか難しいものがありました。定評の高いBen Websterの他、Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Buddy DeFranco等との組み合わせがありますが、それぞれ面白い内容でした。このTrioはベースが居ないので何となく建てつけが悪るそうに思えますが、聞いてみるとそんなことはありません。soloだろうが、伴奏だろうがお構いなく音符過多で弾き続けるTatumのスタイルには本来ベースは必要ないのでしょう。
曲は他流試合らしく、有名曲で固められています。打ち合わせも不要のまま即演奏されたのではないだろうかと想像されます。造りがEasy Goingなだけに粗削りで、その分Jazzyともいえるでしょう。Art Tatum (1910-1956)はこの翌年世を去りました。

Gerry Mulliganは1940年代半ばにKrupa楽団の編曲者として登場しました。bsはHarry Carney系統一色でしたが、Lester Youngの影響なのでしょうか、音質が軽くなり、Serge CharoffやGerry Mulliganは洗練された感じになりました。
Mulliganはpを入れない（必要なら自分で弾いてしまう）セッションが多いのですが、ここではプロのピアニストを入れて気軽にやっています。このころ以降は次第にピアニスト入りが普通へと変化していく感じもあります。
Dave Bailey (1926- 存命）はこの頃から、他流試合を好んだドラマーでGerry Mulliganとは趣味が合ったのでしょう。Alec Dorseyは1960年代にいくつかの録音に名前を連ねていますが、詳細は不明です。
曲は既成のものが多く、Muliganのオリジナルは１曲しかありません。この頃はBig Bandものが多かったMulliganにしては、本作は肩の凝らない気軽に演奏した1枚だったのでしょう。

1970年代初頭に登場したときはかなり衝撃的でしたが、Cecyl Taylorをasで一人で演るとこうなるわけで、contrabass clarinetという楽器の特異性を差し引けば納得いくものでもあります。このセッションは本来はDexter Gordon (ts) を主役にするはずでしたが、急病のため急遽CopenhagenにいたAnthony Barxstonが呼ばれたのだそうです。それがあらぬか、とてもまともな演奏で好感が持てます。曲はすべてスタンダードと言ってよく、asで演じられる3や5は、なかなかの公演と思います。しかし、この作品はBraxtonにとっては異色のもののようです。
Tete Montoliu (1933-1997)はスペイン出身の盲目の天才ピアニストです。Niels Pedersen (1946-2005)はデンマーク出身でO.PetersonのTrioで長年活躍しました。Al Heath（1935-）は有名なHeath３兄弟の末弟で,唯一の存命者です。

1930年代の放送録音は総じて好音質です。このChick WebbのBig Bandもスタジオでの録音より、音の質（周波数やノイズ）という意味では優れていますが、フロントに対してリズムがやや弱く録られている感じです。Chick Webbは派手さはありませんが、玄人受けするという意味では白人Dave Toughと双璧かもしれません。KrupaやWettlingのようなソロイストを煽る系統のドラミングとは根本的に違います。当時のGoodmaが用いた編曲と同じか似たものが多く含まれていますが、音質が良い分Webbのドラムが良く聞こえます。でもKrupaを聞きなれると地味に聞えます。
Chick Webbはこの録音の3年後には持病が悪化してあっけなく他界してしまいます。楽団は、Ella Fitzgerald and her Famous Orchestraと名乗って活動を続けますが、1942年までのことでした。Wayman Carver（1905-1967）は初めてフルートでJazzsoloを演じた先駆者ですが、ここではSaxのみです。Teddy McRae(1908-1999)はCarmen McRaeの父としても有名です。
Mario Bauza (1911-1993)は後年ラテンの世界で名を成しました。Bobby Stark(1906-1945)は木管やピアノまで手掛ける才人ですが、早逝しました。Sandy Williams (1906-1991)は戦後まで活躍しました。Joe Steele (1899-1964)は編曲をこなす才人ですが、ここでも結構長いピアノソロを聞かせてくれます。John Trueheart (1900-1949)はTeddy WilsonのAll Star Sessionでも活躍するベテランです。Charles Lintonは自信を失っていたElla Fitzgeraldを説得して楽団に加入させた功労者です。
曲はWebbやGoodmanの得意曲がずらりと並んでいます。B4は珍しくもGlenn Miller風のアレンジ（1934年）です。B5は当時のHit曲でFats Wallerの録音もありました。

1965年のDuke Ellingtonは元気で多くの録音を残しています。これは、カリブ海のVirgin Islandを訪れた直後の印象を元に書かれた、Virgin Island Suit (A1,2,3,4)を中心として、当時の得意曲を並べて1枚のLPにしたものです。A6やB2,4 はこの組曲の雰囲気そのままの選曲ですが、A5やB1のような古典も混ざっていれば、B1,6のような当時の得意レパートリーも混ざっています。A3はRay NanceのViolinを、B4はCat Andersonのtpをfeatureしたものですが、他では聞かれない曲です。タイトルを見ると、実況録音に見えますが、実際は全曲スタジオ録音です。

1940-42 年頃のDuke Ellingtonは黄金時代と言われます。Cootie Williams (1911-1987), Rex Stewart (1907-1967), Lawrence Brown (1907-1988), Juan Tizol (1900-1984), Berney Bigard (1906-1980), Johnny Hodges (1906-1970), Ben Webster (1909-1973), Harry Carney (1910-1975), Jimmy Blanton (1918-1942) というまさに錚錚たる顔ぶれです。 Ivy Anderson (1904-1949) も若々しい歌声を聞かせます。
選曲はこの時代にしてはやや地味な感じもしますが、StrayhornやMercer Ellingtonの曲も含まれていて、多彩な感じはします。

Ted Brown (1927-存命）はTristano派ですがWarne Marshに比べると太い音色を持っており、Zoot SimsやAl Cohnに近い感じがします。そのBrownが、MarshやRonnie Ballをサイドに従え、さらにArt Pepper (1925-1982)をゲスト格で迎えて作った作品がこれです。Ben Tucker (1930-2013)はTristano派という感じではなく、多くの録音があります。Jeff MortonはTristano派らしく、極力おかずを入れずメトロノーム的な演奏を心がけているようです。
曲は、pop standardとstandardからコード進行を借りてのoriginalです。Foolin' MyselfやBroadwayはLester Youngの名演があり、彼らに大きな影響を与えているのでここでも取り上げられたのでしょう。Broadwayでは２本のテナーがユニゾンでLester Youngのsoloをなぞる部分もあります。Foolin' Myselfは何を間違ったか,Waller-Razfとクレジットされていますが、Jack Lawrence-Peter Tinturinが正解です。
タイガーマスクのような犬の仮面を被ったジャケ写はユニークです。

Warne MarshはWest Costのスカスカテナーの第一人者と言えるでしょう。ここでは、Tristano派と目されるピアノのRonnie Ball (1927-1984) とWest Costの代表的なRhythm隊、Red Mitchell (1927-1992)とStan Levey (1926-2005) とともに1957年に録音した傑作です。
２/３はスタンダード、2曲がOriginalですが、両方ともネタのスタンダード曲がありそうな感じです。

夭逝の名トランぺッターBunny Beriganの放送録音と思われる演奏を集めた稀少盤です。Discographyにも掲載が無いところから放送録音と思われますが、アナウンサーの声は無く音質もかなり良いことから、エアチェックではなさそうです。
BeriganのBig Bandは編曲者の恵まれなかったと言われます。なるほどこれと言ったカラーも無い演奏ですが、そこはソロイストの腕の見せ所なのでしょう。Jack Lacey, Ray Conniff, Joe Dixon, Babe Russin, Georgie Auld, Joe Bushkinあたりが主なソロイストですが、やっぱりBeriganのsoloが出ると一味も二味も違います。Johnny Blowers (1911-2006), Buddy Rich (1917-1987),Hank Wayland (1906-1983）,Mort Stulmaker (1906-1988)も快適なリズムを送っています。
