1930年代のNew YorkのHarlemで活躍したBandの録音集です。Benny Morton (1907-1985)はHenderson楽団やBasie楽団で活躍したtb奏者ですが、リーダー作は極めて少なく、この録音も臨時編成ながら貴重なものです。真に貴重なのはAlex Hill (1906-1937)の４曲です。Big Band結成の準備中に急死したと伝えられる幻のピアニスト兼作編曲者です。

Teddy Hillは後にDizzy GilllespieやKenny Clarkを雇ったり、Bopの温床となったUptown Houseを経営したりで有名ですが、Big Band のリーダーとしても活躍しました。B2で全面的にfeatureされますが、ちょっと奇異な感じもします。KrupaのSwing is Hereと酷似しています。ちなみにUptown RhapsodyはHwkinsのQueener Notionに酷似しています。Mary Lou WilliamsはKansasのAndy Kirk楽団のピアニストでしたが、ここではコンボで録音しています。PassionateはWillie the Lion Smithのピアノ曲のBig Band化です。Mary Louの録音は、特にB5はKansas出身者らしい一味違ったものですが、他はニューヨーク化しています。Tea For Twoはこの頃からの得意曲のようです。
