Duke Ellington (1899-1974)の初期の作品集です。エリントン臭は十分に感じられますが、何か今一つ古い感じも抜けません。1920年代の演奏にしては、シカゴのJazzほどプリミティブではなく、ニューヨークらしい洗練が感じられます。soloistがBubber Miley(1903-1932), Rudy Jackson(1901-1968), Louis Metcalf (1905-1981)あたりがメインです。ニューオリンズ出身のWellman Braud（1891-1966）が加わったセッションでは、ベースがよく効いています。

ChicagoにはEddie Condon一派に属さない連中も当然ながらいました。Jack Teagarden, Dorsey兄弟、Red Nichols, Glenn Miller等は既成のダンスバンドやPick Upメンバーによる臨時のコンボでJazzyな演奏を行っていました。有名になる前のBenny Goodman　（1909-1986）が加わった演奏を集めたものです。Mel Stitzel (1902-1952)はドイツ出身で、1950年代まで活躍しました。

文字通りChicago Jazzの名演集です。ニューオリンズから上って来た黒人Mucisianに触発され自分たちのJazzを始めた白人若手達の直向きな演奏は、欧州の評論家にまさに芸術的と評価されました。黒人バンドのように、クラリネットが絡んだり、トロンボーンが怪奇な動物の鳴きまね音を出したりすることはありません。ギミックの無い、真摯なスタイルは聴衆には受けませんでしたが、熱狂的なファンも作りました。彼らは後年Swing Jazzのスターとなり、Modern Jazzへとつながって行ってのでした。

このセッションのリーダーはRichard Hadlock (1927- )は、日本でも出版されている「ジャズ1920年代」の著者として有名です。師であるGarvin Bushellを招いての録音なので、solo spaceの多くはBushellに充てられています。Bushellは1920年代Sam Woodingのバンドに加わってヨーロッパを楽旅したこともある古老で、この録音時既に79歳でした。Hnedersonはじめ有名バンドに在籍し、後年はColtraneやEric Dolphyとも共演しました。Ray Skjelbred (1940- )はシカゴ出身、Stu Wilsonは西海岸出身、Leon Oakley(1940- )とRay SkjelbredとRichard Hadlockの3名はTurk Murphyのバンドの同僚でした。
選曲は今となっては渋いものばかりです。My Daddy Rocks To Meは1920年代にHusk O'Hareが録音した流行歌ですが、ほとんど演奏されていません。BechetのSi Tu Voisもほとんど忘れられた曲です。

Chocolate DandiesとはDon RedmanとBenny Carterが使っていたバンド名で、全て臨時編成の録音のためのものでした。1930年代前半の有名黒人ミュージシャンに白人を加えた構成が一般的です。A1などはほとんど白人ですし、Hawkinsが加わったSessionは全員が黒人です。それにしてもこの2つのSessionともにdsが居ないのはどうしたわけｄしょう？
1933年のsessionはCarter, Berry, Wilson等が活躍し、だいぶ新しい感じがします。
A7は後にBasieのOne O'Clock JumpのSecond Riffとなった曲です。

Rhthmakerを名乗る当時の準レギュラーグループの録音ですが、人選が珍しい上に演奏がJazzyなため一部で非常な人気のあったグループです。Billy Banks（1908-1967）は晩年を東京都杉並区で過ごしました。東京時代のBilly Banksについてのことはほとんど分かりませんが、映画に出演したり、録音もあるようです。B2で女声の声色を使っているのは、ジャケ解説にはFats Waller?と書かれていますが、Billy Banks自身によるもののようです。Pee Wee Russellはtsおソロを結構たくさん残しています。Bud Freeman風でもありますが、clとは違って没個性的です。Al Morganのスラッピングによるsoloも珍しいものです。Jack Bland (1899-1968)は典型的なRhythm GuiterでCondonと被るのですが、何故かCondon (bjo)の名もすべてにcreditされています。ここでのSigletonを聞くとKrupaの祖先はBaby DodsではなくZutty Sigletonであることがわかります。Tommy DorseyはB6でsoloを取りますが、全くメロディー通りです。。Chick Bullock (1898-1981)は1930年代に活躍した白人歌手ですが、多くの録音を残しています。その多くに有名Jazzmenが加わっていました。B7では珍しいFrank Froeba　（1907-1981）のJoe Sullivan張りのsoloが聞かれます。

Pee Wee RussellはModern派と共演するなど、1960年代末まで活躍を続けたChicago派としては珍しい存在です。このCDは1930年代末から40年代半ばの、Pee Weeにとっての全盛期の録音を集めた決定版です。3，4はJam Session at Commodoreとしての録音ですが、Take１と2でこうも違うのかと感心する出来です。珍しくもCondon一党にLionel Hamptonが加わった5、Condonとは20年代から親交のあるFats Wallerが加わった7は貴重な録音と言えるでしょう。Pee Weeのリーダーセッションである15-22はJess Stacyのピアノもたっぷり聞けます。22はｋの時代にしては長尺の演奏です。全体を通して1920年代に高い評価を得た芸術の香り高い演奏です。

1929年から1940年にかけて録音されたChicago Jazzと言えるRecordingを集めた作品ですが、珍しい録音としてHusk O'Hare の録音があります。全員無名のmusicianですが、まあこなれた感じの演奏です。編曲は古臭いものです。Husk O'Hare (1896-1970)は楽器を演奏するわけでも唄を歌う訳でもないのですが、なぜかBand Leaderということになっています。珍しいmucisianとしては、Jack Gardner （1903-1957）は中西部のテリトリーバンドで活躍しました。George Snurpus（1906-1996）は主にWingy Mnonneとの録音が残っています。A9では珍しいEddie Condonの歌が１コーラス聞けます。
