作りはJazzというよりpopsですが、各soloistは完全なBopを演奏します。Jazzとしての評価は困難かも知れませんが、なかなか面白く楽しめる作品です。Richie ColeはHamptonやBuddy Richの楽団で活躍した後、歌手のEddie Jeffersonと活動していました。Eddie Jefferson (1918-1979) は1979年にColeと居たところを射殺されました。2は鎮魂歌なのでしょうか。

Sidemenはいずれも、Coleによく付き合っている連中です。Tim Hauser (1941-2014) はMannhattan Transferのメンバーとして有名です。プロデュースのBen Sidran (1943- )はここでもピアノで参加していますが、このCDの方向性はSidranのものと思われます。

曲は雑多ですが、DameronのMisty Nightはこの頃良く取り上げられスタンダード化しています。La Bambaは民謡ですが、いかにもそれらしい演奏です。Star Trec I はBreak に「未知との遭遇」を入れるという真正映画ファンには怒られそうなColeらしいおふざけが入っています。Straight No Chaserは普通の仕上がりになってしまいました。歌手のクレジットは忘れてしまったのかありません。

なんとなくハードバップというよりR&B風の感じがします。Sidemenはいずれも有名楽団の出身ですが、HamptonやMillindarに在籍した名残なのかも知れません。Yusef Slam（1929-2008) もEarskin Hawkins楽団出身です。Purnell Rice (1924-1974)は主に歌伴で活躍しています。John BirksはDizzy Gillespieのことかと思いましたが、そうではないようです。Bill Swindellは趣味の良いテナー奏者です。もっと有名でも良かったかなと思いますが、無名のままです。Leo ParkerもBilly Eckstein や Dizzy Gillespie の big bandのbsを担ってきています。ちょっとR&Bっぽいところも含めてHarry Carney派といって良いでしょう。ところがこの録音の約半年後の1962年2月に心臓麻痺で他界しました。
曲はメンバーのオリジナルが多く、Robert LewisはRock歌手のBobby Lewisと思われます。7はParker-SwindellとクレジットされていますがSweet Georgia Brown丸出しになってしまいました。

Marshall McDonald (1959-  )は、Big Bandで活躍（来日も多い）するsax playerです。Basie楽団でtsを吹いていると思ったら、Ellington楽団でもasを吹いていたことがありました。Basei楽団来日時に、青山のBlue Noteの売店で本人が売っていたのがこのCDです。John Colianni (1966- )は、Lew Tabakinのサイドを務めたりしていますが、Concord等にリーダー作も10枚ほどあります。Bill Moring (1958- )もHampton, Herman, Basieなどへの参加があるベテランです。Jim Molaも60代半ばのベテランです。McDonaldのtsはpost-Coltrane世代ですが、Lester Youngへの傾倒がよく分かります。10はピアノが加わっておらず、Coltraneからの影響も顕著です。この曲だけは、Fade inしてFade outする演奏で、Jam Sessionの切れ端のようです。
曲はほとんどがスタンダード曲ですが、Fungi Mana はtpのBlue Mitchellの1965年の作曲です。

PowellよりもArt TatumやOscar Petersonに近い感じのPhineas Newborn Jr.の最初期の録音です。弟のCalvin Newborn (g) (1933-2018) も加わっていることになっていますが、音は聞こえません。　1972年にEarl Hinesのバンドに加わって来日してTVに出たのを見た記憶があります。曲は、B2を除いて有名曲ばかりです。　Newbornのピアノはなかなか個性的ではありますが、麻薬禍のためか活動が長続きせず、録音も散発的です。ジャケットの写真はNYのセントラルパークなんでしょうが、どこの角だかわかりません。
内容は、とても楽しめます。ベテランのリズム隊Oscar Pettiford(1922-60), とKenny Clarke (1914-1984）も快適です。

Art Blakey (1919-1990)は最初はピアニストで後にFletcher Henderson末期の楽団のドラマーとなりました。1950年代半ばから1980年代いっぱいまでの長期間にわたってJazz Messengersを率い来日も多く果たしました。この録音では、Kenny Dorham (1924-1972), Hank Mobley (1930-1986), Horace Silver (1928-2014), Doug Watkins (1934-1962)といったオールスターのバンドで生き生きと演奏しています。
1980年代に、vol.3がLPで出ましたがそれは後日紹介しましょう。

Mal Waldronは歌手Billie Holiday (1915.4.7-1959.7.17)の最後の伴奏者として名を上げました。Left AloneにはBillie自身の作詞が付いているといわれます。これが録音された時まだ存命でした。この曲だけasのJackie McLean (1931-2006) がゲストとして加わっています。ベースのJulian Euell (1929-2019)は少し古めのコンセプションを持つ感じですが、音楽でPhDを取得しています。Al Dreares（1927-2011）は1950年代末で目立った活動を止めてしまったようです。
曲はJazz喫茶のヒット曲1,7が何と言っても有名です。You Don't Know What Love Isは普通のスタンダード曲ですが、AirginはNigeriaの綴りをひっくり返したSonny Rollinsのオリジナル曲です。何故Mal Waldronがこれを演じたのか（誰が演ってもいいのですが）、演奏を聴いても分かりません。

Swing派としては若い世代に属するBobby Hacket（1915-1976）はGlenn Miller楽団でギターを弾いていましたが、Cor奏者としての名声は同楽団のString of Peralsのsoloが当たってからと思います。Bixの代役としてGoodmanのカーネギーホールコンサートに出演したりしました。
この盤はvol.6くらいまである1970年のライブ盤の1枚目ですがvol.1とは記されていません。ゲストに長老格のtb奏者Vic Dickenson (1906-1984)が参加して、いくつかのorginalも提供しています。Dave McKenna (1930-2008)は70年代後半から80年代にかけてsoloを沢山録音している名手です。Jack Lesburg (1920-2005)とCliff Leeman (1913-1986)もBobbyと同世代です。

リーダーのEddie Locke（1930-2010)は、長らくColeman Hawkinsのサイドを務めてきました。このグループではTommy Flanagan (1930-2001)と並んで最年少です。最年長はtbのVic Dickenson (1906-1984)、次がBudd Johnson (1910-1984), Roy Eldridge (1911-1989), Major Holly (1924-1990)と続きます。フロントラインは60代後半、リズム隊も40代後半から50代という超ベテランばかりです。フロントはいずれも1930年代から活躍した強者ばかりで、この頃まではこういう人たちが普通に現役として活躍していました。
リーダーがEddie Lockeということで、dsのソロスペースが若干多いように思います。８は全面的なfeaturedといっても良い演奏です。フロントの中では、前年Benny Carterのグループでも来日したBudd Johnsonが若々しいsoloを聞かせます。Major Hollyの弓弾きとハミングのユニゾンも健在です。Royもこの時期にしては、リラックスして好演です。

シカゴ出身でニューオリンズで活躍したピアニストRonnie Koleの初期の1枚です。Boubon Streetの古い建物にあるKole's Cornerでの実況録音ということですが、歓声がやや不自然でもありますが、まあこんなもんかもしれません。ほとんどメロディーから離れないのでJazzというよりカクテルピアノといったほうがふさわしい内容です。大仰な感じのピアノですが、実演は迫力あったでしょう。
当時のヒット曲がおおおいのですが、世界残酷物語の主題歌 "More" が演奏されているところに時代を感じさせます。
けっこう多くのLPやCDも出ていますが、Jazzの世界ではあまり知られていません。

ピアノもうまいBuddy Grecoは1940年代末から、1960年代にかけて活躍した弾き語りを主体とした歌手です。四畳半的な歌い方と、本格的な歌、さらにべらんめい口調、けれんみたっぷりに歌うさまはまさにエンターテイナーといった感じです。曲はスタンダードメインですが、1，2のように知られていない物も取り上げています。

Gray や Doug Mettome, Stan Hasselgardがいた頃のV-Diskから集めたBenny GoodmanのコンボとBig Bandの演奏です。A面は、Philladelphiaでの演奏とほぼ同じですが、8だけはCount Basieが加わってちょっと古風な感じのピアノを弾いています。珍しい録音です。
B面のBig Bandは曲は昔の物でも編曲は新しいものです。King Porter StompがBopになっているのは聞きなれるまで苦労します。B6は例によって混声コーラス入りです。Glenn Millerのヒット曲 B7もモダンな編曲とソロで楽しめます。

 A面はDexter-Wardellのテナーバトルを主体としたJam Session。リズムが暴走しないし、tpやpのソロもちゃんとスペースが取られており、野蛮さがない好もしい内容です。B面は、Tony Scott (1921-2007) の初期のQuartetの演奏ですが、スタジオに客を入れたいわゆるスタジオライブという奴です。B１はAir Mail Special, B2はFlying Homeが元曲のようです。B1はMilt Hinton (1910-2000)のfeaturedです。Tony ScottのクラリネットはBenny GoodmanをModern化した感じです。曲もGoodman StandardともいうべきものでBGへの傾倒ぶりが良く分かります。

1949年頃のBGはBopに傾倒していたと言われますが、Big Bandの方はコーラスグループを含む大甘の演奏も多く、よく言えば多種多様、悪く言えば玉石混交な感じがします。Sidemenも何となく地味ですが、Wardell Grayとその後任のZoot Sims (1925-1985) はいずれもLester Young派の若手でした。他には、後年編曲者として名を成すBilly Beyer (1927-1996)等が加わっています。 Dolly Houston (1925- ) はこの後、Woody HermanやTommy Dorseyに加わって活躍するいわゆるBand Singerです。歌のオブリガートの多くでGrayのtsが聞かれます。

1948年6月3日はPhilladelphiaのclickに出演していたBenny Goodman一党がラジオにも出演しました。Swedish Pastry,同IIにはこの日の録音は収められていません。さらに、Guestに当時売り出し中のPatti Page　（1927-2013）が参加して若々しい歌声を聞かせてくれます。
B面は翌1949年のBig Bandの演奏で、Undercurrent Bues, Shishkabop, ClarinadeなどのModernなサウンドが聞かれます、多くはChico O'Farill (1921-2001)の編曲によるものです。　Buddy Greco　（1926-2017）のピアノと歌も新鮮です。Francis Beecher (1924-2014) は後にビルヘイリーと彼のコメッツに参加して大ブレークしますが、ここではほとんど活躍の場はありません。

A1,2,3,4 はStanのスエーデンでの録音ですが、かなり古臭い感じの演奏（特にピアノが古い）です。それが、A5,6では長足の進歩を遂げています。6ではかなり長いソロが聞かれます。B面は、Philadelphiaに続いての演奏と、続いてのNew Yorkでの演奏が収められています。GrayもHasselgardも若くしての事故死なので死の影はまったく感じられません。B5は ついにIndianaのメロディーはかけらも出てこなくなり、タイトルもDonna Leeになりました。

1948年スエーデン出身のクラリネット奏者Stan Hasselgard (1922-1948) がBenny Goodmanのコンボに参加します。西海岸で知り合ったGrayがBGに紹介したとも言われます。BGが自分と同じクラ奏者（しかもよく似たスタイルの）を自分のコンボに入れたのはStanが最初で最後です。それだけ気に入って期待もしていたのでしょうが、半年後の11月には交通事故であっさりこの世を去ってしまいます。この頃のBGのコンボはStanとGrayの活躍でモダンな音を出していました、曲も新しい物ばかりです。アマチュアによる録音とのことで、途中テープの伸びなどが聞かれますがまずまずの音質で録れています。Billy Bauer (1915-2005) は一時Lennie Tristanoの一団に加わっていたこともありますが、幅広いスタイルを持っています。Arnold Fishkin(d) (1919-1999)もこの頃現れたモダンなベーシストです。Mel Zelnick (1924-2008)もTristanoグループにいたことがあります。
Teddy Wilson (1912-1986)は旧世代に属する人で、このグループでは古い感じがします。

まったく打ち合わせのない即興演奏を行うとこんな感じになるのでしょうか。打ち合わせがないと、全体の中での起承転結（あまりJazzでは重視されない）がハッキリしません。どこが盛り上げポイントかよく分からないという、地味な印象も与えてしまいます。読書でもしながら、ダラッと聞いても妨げにならないような聞き方は邪道なのでしょう。一生懸命digすれば新たな聞きどころも発見できるのでしょう。
唯一のスタンダード曲である３もとっつきにくい演奏です。ジャケット写真の、センスの無さも、人口に膾炙する類の名盤化の妨げになってしまっています。山下洋輔の喧嘩ピアノ的なDuoを想像して作ったのかもしれません。ここでも一部そうのような場面もありますが、全体的には大人しい世界でした。ジャケットが良ければ名盤化できたかも知れません。

 1950年代半ばから1960年代初めにかけて、Bill Evans (1929-1980)のピアノは圧倒的な影響力を誇りました。先輩格にあたるOscar Petersonにまで影響しました。この時代は、ベース奏者の地位が特にScott LaFaro (1936-1961.7.6) の活躍もあって上がった時期であるとも言えます。ここでも、ベースはあまりランニングせず、ピアノに絡む時間帯が多く、PaulMotian (1931-2011）のドラムがタイムキーパーとなっています。
Beautiful Loveは昔Art Tatumが演奏して以来忘れられた名曲でしたが、この時代に突如復活しました。IsraelはMiles Davisの旧作で演奏されていた曲です。Nardisはあまりにも数多く演奏されすぎ、このパターンに飽きてしまった感じもあります。
名盤としてよく紹介されます。それだけに、ひっかかりもなくサラリと流れてしまいます。
