Bill Evans（1929-1980）といえばもっぱらtrio、たまにsoloという感じで、ホーン奏者を自ら加えた録音は多くありません。。これは珍しくも、ワンホーンの編成で演じられますが、中身はEvansのJazzであると言って良いでしょう。それにしても、枯葉のイントロなど、これしか無いのかと思わせる変化のなさで、Jazzとしては相当損をしている。発売当時がどうであったか分かりませんが、Evans人気ゆえ長い生命力を保ったCDです。
なお、Steigは2011年頃から横浜に住んでいましたが、2016年他界しました。
Steigはこの録音の数年前、交通事故で顔面麻痺となり、片耳の聴力も失ていたといわれます。そんなことは全然感じさせない演奏です。「スパルタカス愛のテーマ」なんて曲が混ざっているあたりに1969年という時代を感じさせます。

Capitalらしい高音質の録音で、すごく新しい感じのBneyy Carterが楽しめます。13では珍しくソプラノサックスを吹いており、1980年代風な感じがします。13,14,15はCarter作ですが他はいわゆるスタンダード曲です。12と14では自分で吹くtsをオーバーダビングしています。この時代にしては珍しい試みです。

曲はWarsaw Concerto以外はよく知られた曲。Dorothy Donegan(1922-1998)はHines-Tatumの影響下の派手なスタイルのピアニストです。ここでも元気一杯にストライドやブギウギまで繰り出して聴衆を楽しませます。実演を間近で見られたらさぞ面白かったことだろうと思います。Jimmy Woode (1926-2005) はエリントン楽団出身、Norman Wearringtonは幅広く活躍するベテランです。（当時は若手でした。）

1968年の録音の割には音質がくぐもった感じがします。1は1930年代にDeccaへの録音もあるが全然違う編曲でLockjawのテナーが活躍します。２はGillespieのBop曲だがBasie楽団にもいくつかの録音があるのはちょっと不思議です。3と11はRicahrd Booneの特徴的な歌をfeatureしたものですが、ちょっとゲテモノです。Yvonnee Lanauzeは1950年のエリントンの初めてのLP録音の時Mood Indigoを歌っていた歌手です。ここでは、古い感じのBlues歌手として登場し、4と9で歌いますが、絶叫調です。他は典型的Basieナンバーです。
Hrold Jonesはこの当時の若手ドラマーでした。Norman KeenanはHarry Belafonteの伴奏者でもあった堅実なbassistです。
音が良ければ、Basie in London (これも実はStockholm録音）に比肩する名盤になったかもしれません。（ちょっとオーバーか）

曲は１９４０年代から６３年ころまでのヒット曲が雑多に並んでいます。Jazzではあまり取り上げられない曲が多いのですが、Basie楽団が演奏するとJazzyな感じになります。何を演奏してもJazzになったLouis Armstrongと同じ感じがします。それでも10は、Maharia Hackson, Nina Simon, Andy Williams, Chris Barbor等が取り上げています。Soloの分量は多くないのですが、Eric Dixonのfl, Lockjawのts, Al Greyのtbがメインでしょうか。tpのソロが誰かは分かりません。Basie自身は5で活躍します。2名のドラマーの名前がクレジットされていますが、いずれも特徴を発揮するまでいたっておらず聞き分け困難です。
まあ、全てのBasie Fanへお薦めというわけではありませんが、1960年代半ばは迷いの時期だったと思って聞けばそれなりに面白く聞けます。

元々のLPのタイトルがそうなっていたのか？CD化する際に誤ったのか分かりませんが、1943-1949は看板に偽りありで、実際は1943-1948とすべきでした。4,5と6,7は同年で全く同じメンバーですが、異なる日の録音故このような表記になったものと思われます。
Yeah Manは1930年代にHenderson楽団が録音したのと同じ編曲です。The KingはJumpin’ At The Woosdideを焼き直したような（というよりそのもの）の曲ですが、tsのWardell Greyが長いソロスペースを与えられています。8でも長いtsソロが出ますが、こちらはLucky Thompsonと思われます。

過渡期の演奏だけにちょっとどうなの？って感じのところもありますが、新旧のメンバーの入れ替わり具合も面白く聞けます。

まさに黄金時代のCount Basie楽団のライブ録音です。同じ日というわけではなく、1958年のいくつかの日の演奏から集められたもののようです。聞きものは、何といっても１で、この曲はAtmic Basieでも演奏されていますが、ここではBasieのピアノが延々と活躍します。ライブではこんなに長く弾いていたんですね。
全ての曲で、Sonny Payneの強力なドラムが聞かれ、エンターティナー振りを発揮しています。Eddie Jonesのベースもよく効いています。ずらりと並んだBasie Standardというべき有名曲は少し大きめの音量で聞くと迫力あります。62年前の録音とは思えません。
