演奏はNew Orleans 出身の白人によるものですが、初期のJazzの雰囲気がよく出ていると思います。曲も後年までよく演奏されたいわゆるスタンダード曲です。3  Discontented Blues (Meyers-Schoebell-Miller)はクレジットが演奏者になっていますが、実際はFrankie and Johnnyです。22は珍しくもJelly Roll Mortonが加わっていますが、saxアンサンブルのバックにピアノが聞こえますが、soloと呼ぶほどのものでもありません。

Claude Thornhill (1908-1965)は1930年代初頭からピアニストとして活躍し、1937年にBigBandを結成しました。1940年頃からはフレンチホルンやチューバ、当時としては珍しかったピッコロやフルート等の木管群を加えて、洒落た編曲を施し人気を博しました。その洗練度は若き日のGil Evans (1912-1988) やGerry Mulligan (1927-1996)に影響を与え、Cool Jazzの始祖などと言われました。まあ、それはちょっとどうかな？と思いますが、戦後（この録音がなされた頃）はほんとにモダンな感じの演奏（Bopではありませんが）を聞かせてくれています。幼馴染のDanny Polo(1901-49)や後年Cool派の代表となるLee Konitz（1927-存命）が加わっているのも聞き所です。

1958年頃テレビが一般化していたアメリカでは番組のテーマソングは一種のヒット曲のようになっていました。（日本でもその傾向があります。）そのヒット曲を趣味の良いWest Coast Jazzにしたのが本作です。oboeが大活躍し普通のJazzとはちょっと違う音色が楽しめます。

後年The Count Basie Orchestraを率いることになるDennis Mackrelの初来日は、Basie自身にとっては最後の来日でした。Mackrelが初めて登場したアルバムが本作です（たぶん）。歯切れの良いフィルインを随所に聞かせてくれます。編曲はずっと常連だったSammy Nesticoです。Nesticoはこの頃のBasie楽団と最も相性の良かった作編曲者だと思います。BasieのPabloへの正式録音は本作が最後のようです。1984年４月にすい臓ガンで亡くなりました。

Count Basie(1904-1984) は1930年代からBig Bandを率いてきましたので膨大なレパートリーを持っています。この晩年の作品では、旧作の再演を中心に、メンバーのオリジナルを集めています。珍しくSammy Nesticoの作が１曲もありません。Freddie Greene(1911-1987)も健在で、Bobby Plater(1914-1982)（最後の録音）、Sonny Cohn (1925-2006), Booty Wood (1919-1987)などの古老がまだ残っていた頃の録音です。Basie亡き後、楽団を率いる、Grover MitchellやBill Hughesも現役として活躍中です。

Wingy Manone (1900-1982)はNew Orleans出身の白人tp奏者です。若い時に事故で右腕を失い左手一本でtpを吹いていました。Manone以外のメンバーは主にBob Crosby楽団からのもののようです。Isle of Capriは文献によれば、1935年にこの演奏が大ヒットしたことになっています。他の曲とあまり変わらない演奏ですが、この曲だけがヒットした本当の理由は分かりません。

演奏はDixieというわけではなく、そこはかとなく編曲されています。編曲はギターのNappy Lamareのような気がします。

こんばんは、JazzyIsshiです。今夜も昨晩と同じように1945年のBigBandです。Billy Eckstineは歌手ですが、大変なJazzファンで自らtpを吹きつつBig Bandを組織しました。1940年代半ばにはBopの温床などと言われました。昨日のHinesのBandに比べてもModernな感じがします。

このBandの音楽監督はBudd Johnsonだったと言われています。アンサンブルの趣味の良さはBenny Carter譲りです。Dameron, Malachi, Jerry Valentineの好編曲を得て溌溂たる演奏を聞かせます。ただ昨日のHines楽団同様過渡期的な感じもします。NavarroもEldridgeの影響を残しています。Gene AmmonsやBudd Johnsonも何となく古い感じがします。John JacksonのアルトはParkerを追っているようですが、Jimmy Dorsey的な部分もあり興味深いものがあります。Malachiのピアノも、何となくSwing風です。Sarahの歌は幼い感じの声質で後年の面影はありません。Lena HornとBilly Eckstineは大物感が漂っています。
全体としては過渡期とはいえ、完成された第一級のBig Bandだったと思います。素晴らしい。

Earl Hines は1920年代からBig Bandを維持してきました。1940年台半ばにはBeBopの影響を受けてModernな編曲と若手のsoloistを採用してBandの生き残りを図りました。その中でもHinesのピアノだけはどう考えても（聞いても）Modernな感じはしません。1947年末にはBandを解散して単身Louis ArmstrongのAll Starsに参加します。Hines楽団の末期は　Wardell Greyが登場するとModernな感じがしますが、Hinesの安易なBoogie Woogie調のSoloはコーニーというに相応しいアンバランス振りで、解散したのは正解だったのではないかと思われます。過渡期の演奏という興味はありますし、Hinesのsoloも一部の曲では極めて立派なものです。一度失われたバランスを取り戻すのは困難だったということでしょう。

1971年のリリース作品ですが、ずいぶん新しい感じがします。Fusion華やかりし頃（1978年頃）の録音かと思いましたが、よーく聞くとやっぱり1971年かなとも思います。内容は昨今流行のダンス音楽（？）で、Tjaderの作としては地味なもののようです。確かにJazz気がイマイチ足りない感じがします。

戦後の西海岸でのDixieland Jazzの隆盛の波に乗って、古老達のバンドも元気な演奏を続けていた1954年シカゴへ楽旅した時の演奏です。最年長はbassのPops Foster(1892-1969),次がDarnell Howard(1895-1966)、以下Muggsy Spanier(1901-1967), Jimmy Archey(1902-1967), Earl Hines(1903-1983)と続き, Earl Watkins(1920-2007)だけが当時としては若手ということができます。

白人はSpanier一人、ArcheyとHowardは1930年代HinesのBig Bandのメンバーでした。Posp FosterはNew Orleansの伝統そのままに強力なベースを弾いています。曲目から見ても、メンバーから見ても、HinesのBandにMuggsy Spanierが単身参加した形になっています。

Spanierは例の語尾をしゃくりあげるミュートも交えて、大病を患った後とは思えない元気なプレーをしています。Hinesのピアノは再評価（1964年頃）を受ける前ですが、実は評価とは裏腹に全く変わっていないことが分かります。

3月15日にはNew YorkのVillage Vanguardで録音を行ったHinesはそのわずか2日後にはベルギーの首都ブリュッセルで録音を行っています。アルバムのタイトルはReunion in Brusselsとなっていますが、これは1930年代にHinesのBig Bandに在籍し、1940年代にも屡々Hinesと共演したdrumのWallace Bishop (1906-1986)との再会を意味しています。 演奏はこの頃の定番曲をずらりと並べての力演です。

期待通りHines Trioの快調な演奏を聞くことができます。昨日とはbとdsが変わっています。Gene RamyはKansas City出身でTeddy Wilsonともよく演奏しています。Eddie LockはHawkinsにずっと付き合っていたdrummerです。Budd Johnsonは1930年台初頭からHines Big Bandの音楽監督格だったので、Guestという感じはあまりしません。テナーのスタイルは常に変わり続けた人です。この頃はColtraneの影響さえも感じます。

こんばんはJazzyIsshiです。今夜はEarl Hines (1905-1983) が再評価の真っ最中にいた頃の録音です。Great Reunionと題されていますが、HinesはEldridgeとHawkinsとはあまり接点が無かったので何故このようなタイトルになったのか不明です。

TrioによるMedleyは快調だが、EldridgeとHawkinsがボロボロと論評されていますが、まあ、年相応と考えれば、それほど酷い演奏と言うわけではありません。それどころか、なかなか頑張ってるじゃんと思わせる部分もあります。Hawkinsが音がよろめきながらも、難しいハーモニーを感じさせるフレーズを繰出したり、Eldridgeも相変わらず無謀な高音をヒットしたりするあたりは、なんとも言えない雰囲気があります。Jazzは挑戦的な演奏を年相応に演るところに面白さがあるのだと最認識させられます。
